What Makes a Great Mentor?
Later this month I will be leading two programs on mentoring for mentors and mentees. Just for a moment, imagine you are sitting in on the program and suppose I told you that you had to choose one, or at most two, words to describe the attributes of the best mentors. What word or words would you choose? Here are my ideas:
- Principle Centered
- Trustworthy
- Ethical
- Role models
- Committed
- Patient
- Understanding
- Respectful
- Responsive
- Motivated
- Talented
- Enthusiastic
- Energetic
- Inspiring
- Unselfish
- Fair
- Thoughtful
- Encourager
- Upbeat
- Storyteller
- Fun
- Team player
- Supportive
- Straight forward
- Even keeled
- Feedback giver
- Shares
- Getting Better
- Knows person
- People focused
- Confident
- Humble
- Good listener
- Open
- Accessible
- Communicator
- Appreciative
Cordell,
I would add available (which is similar to accessible, I guess, but not exactly the same); interested; constructive (as in, able to give constructive advice and/or criticism, as may be necessary); and willing to devote the time and energy necessary to develop a long-term mentor-mentee relationship.
Best regards,
Allison L. Kashon
